The image of a dog was commonly used to represent loyalty and faithfulness throughout history. In this instance, we see it on a leash, walked by none other than cupid. Which leads me to make the connection, that the words are referring to the subject being faithful in love.
 
A sweet sentiment and one we should all be true to!
